Gary
President's Message
Hi All Seasons,

What a great event, I’m speaking of course of the 35th Anniversary Celebration. Thank you, Angie and the committee for all the work you put in, to make our 35th such a success. To be there with George Phillips and all the Past President’s was truly an honor. To put on an event like this starts over a year in advance, it takes dedication and special pride to make the event something you, yourself would be proud to attend. If she ever gets the time, Ms. Angie Ross would make a very good President representing All Seasons.

I want to personally thank Past President Thomas Shipp for putting on the Golf Tournament and seeing that George made it to the events. It’s not often that a former President comes back and gets involved in putting on an event with the club. You made me proud Thomas, thanks.

Thanks to all the clubs that attended, Black Avalanche, Fire & Ice, Black Gold, Ebony Ski & Racquet and Four Seasons West. Thanks to all the former and existing members who shared in the celebration and a very, very special thanks to Errol Kerr and Ms. Catherine Kerr for making the trip from Truckee to attend and sit at my table.

OK, that’s it, now let’s talk skiing. The snow is starting to fall and its time to wax the skis. Sign up for Winter Carnival; we want to be #1 in registrations for the Region. It’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun and its right around the corner. Drive, carpool, hitchhike, we don’t care…..just as long as you register.

By time you get this Newsletter it will be the end of Daylight Savings time, so do you know what that means?? Change your smoke detector batteries when you change your clock.

FIRE SAFETY MESSAGES OF THE MONTH: Prevent chimney fires, sweep them clean // Put Fireplace ashes in metal cans

Thinking Snow,

Gary D. Garrett,
President, All Seasons Ski Club

Ski Swap

Skier You know those ski boots you brought last year and they just don't get you down the mountain and those nice ski pants that shrank - because you're the same size you were last year. Well here's the prefect opportunity to bring those items to ASSC Annual Ski Swap. Black mock turtle necks - please give your size to Gary -
Continuing the Celebration
Sit down with George Phillips

George

The late Elijah Muhammad stated that as African-American, we don't know who we are, nor do we know where we come from, and we certainly have no idea where we are going. George Phillips, the founder of All Seasons Ski Club, states that the club started as a social and activity group that has evolved to promoting winter sports to African- Americans and to place an African-American on the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. George's vision was a ski club that provides activities with a social theme. This is demonstrated by the people who do not ski or play golf, can get together in a communion feeding or quenching of there thirst. George was instrumental in the forming of the National Brotherhood of Skiers and each ski club having a youth club at the 1st summit in Aspen, CO.

Some Club History The first club meeting was held at George's apartment on Ashby Ave. near the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley. The club meetings where held at various club members homes or apartments. I attended my 1st meeting at someone home in San Francisco. Leon Taylor, a former ASSC president, had and apartment with a recreation room that over looked Lake Merritt, meeting were held meeting there for a time. As the club grew, the need for a larger facility to meet was apparent. The meetings were held at a hotel by Lake Merritt and finally move to the Lake Merritt Boat House. After meeting at the Boathouse for several years, the Boathouse had to be renovated. We moved to the current location at the California Ballroom.

George was the pitcher on the All Seasons championship softball team. We were champs of the Berkeley coed softball league and Western Regions Summer Carnival games at Fresno State University. All the clubs in the region were always gunning for All Seasons. The other clubs must enjoy beating All Seasons at the annual picnic now.

The Willie Bus! Willie Cooper was president of All Seasons and owned a bus. Willie would drive the club to ski trips and keep a conversation going with people in the back of the bus. For less than $100.00; Willie put together an overnight ski trip to Tahoe. The trip included: bus leaving at 5 am Saturday, skiing at a Reno ski resort, Saturday night staying at hotel casino that gave each bus rider a $20.00 refund for food or gaming, and skiing Sunday at Northstar Ski Resort before returning home.

Former All Seasons president Don Pilkinton and the late Ray Whitaker started the Pirates, some of the best skiers in the NBS. All Seasons Thomas Spyder Johnson and his followers' makeup the largest group of Mono Skiers anywhere.

All Seasons was the originator of the wine country bike ride that grew to 200+ riders with a BBQ at a park with swimming pool and picnic tables near Calistoga. The wineries started charging for sampling wine when African-America groups of 20-30 bikers started showing up every summer.

During Sam Williams presidency the All Seasons grew to 700+ members. Fire and Ice in San Jose by formed All Seasons south bay members. The late Angie Cain helped form Black Avalanche a younger group of skiers. Black Gold Ski Club is former All Seasons member that decide to start their own club to deal with the NBS in a different manner.

All Seasons Youth Ski Club has always been a leader in the Western Region B.E.S.T. program and promoting skiing to the youth in the community. From Ms. Davia Jackson and others to Ms. Karen Ambeau, the youth club has always had great directors. Bring your children and grandchildren to ASYSC. Most have gone on to college; some are lawyers, doctors, entertainers, and other professionals. There even an Oakland Raiders linebacker that was a youth club member! We are well on our way to placing Errol Kerr, an All Seasons Youth Ski Club member, on the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. Errol competed with and won several races against the U.S. Olympic Ski team last season on TV at locations around the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand.

We are a social club with an active agenda (skiing, hiking, biking, camping, whitewater rafting, golfing, traveling, concerts, movies, plays, opera, art, books, fashion, etc). Truly a club for All Seasons! We came from the idea and vision of a man for All Seasons; Mr. George Phillips! We have been to the mountaintop, the Summit! We are headed to the U.S. Olympic Ski Team!
Thank you George Phillips!

Kudos to Deborah Carter a new member of 100 Black Women, SF Chapter.
Thank You Hello All Seasons Family, Kenny & I , plus our family, want to thank all of you so much for your calls, letters, emails, and support after the passing of my dear Sister JoAnne Taylor.
Joanne was so kind and such a wonderful person, as you know...We are so sad that she has left us, and yet we know she lived a wonderful life, and enjoyed every minute of it! The Captain of the sailboat she was on said, "JoAnne road her bicycle until the wheels came off!"
She was a selfless giver of her time, resources, and positive spirit - everyone she touched was a better person for it! And she also was well-known in many volunteer circles, and was wonderfully praised by many including the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, as well as the City of Gardena at the Memorial service held in her honor, which was attended by over 800 friends & family!
Again our gratitude & thanks - we will always remember your kindness!

All Seasons Golf Gathering, a Great Day for All
Golf Contrary to reports the All Seasons Golf Gathering was an overwhelming success. The participants gathered at Metropolitan Golf Links on Friday October 12, 2007. The rain did not stop the comradely and the smiles on the faces of old friends coming together again. This is what it all was about! The sun was suppose to come out and join us at 12:00 oclock, it never did. At 12:30 pm the rain came, at 1 pm we tee off as the rain intensified. I was in the last group with Gary Garrett and Roosevelt Hattin and by the second hole the rain was coming down harder. By the third hole we concluded that by the 5th hole, which is close to, the clubhouse, would be the last hole!
Kenny Allen and Madgy Blue where the two hardy souls that completed all 18 holes!
1st place went to Kenny who shot and 85!
2nd place went to Madgy who shot 90
3rd place went to Wayne Duckworth for shooting 2 birdies, 2 pars, a bogey, and the good sense to stop after the 5th hole, as did the rest of us.

GolfI want to thank all participants. A special thanks to four beautiful ladies Debbie Taylor, Kim Winston, Jana Cain, and former ASSC president Marvell Allen. Thank you to the WAMU group lead by Ricardo Thomas. Willie Cooper was there with plenty of stories about the Willie Bus and other fun times had by all.

The happy hour was moved to El Torritos in San Leandro due to electrical problems caused by the rain. George Phillips, the founder of All Seasons Ski Club was there to greet old and new members. The food and drink was flowing heavy. Most people contributed to the bill; however we did have a few members that ran out without paying. You probably can guess who that is, as they always complain about financial issues at club meetings. The happy hour was full of fun and everyone had a great time. Don/t miss the next gathering.
