Farewell to Our Founding Father

George Phillips

Look at the picture of a man who’s lovely wife, Patricia Phillips, greeted the guest at the door with a smile that belied the hurt in her heart; who’s daughter cried while trying to tell everyone how much she missed her father.

Look at the picture of a man who many past members of All Seasons Ski Club showed up at Studio One on 45th St. in Oakland to honor the man that brought many of us together.

Look at the picture of a man who was one of the 1st Black research chemist at Shell Oil Company, at a time when of the 1400 employees at the facility only 14 where men of color and 12 of those pushed a broom around the buildings.

Look at the picture of a man who wanted to join the ski club at Shell Oil Company but was told by one of the other employees, “I don’t think so”.

Look at the picture of a man who started his own ski club; All Seasons Ski Club and was the co-founder of the National Brotherhood of Skiers.

Look at the picture of man who was the founding member of the Pirates, some of the best skiers in the NBS, who would rent a cabin near the ski resorts.

Look at the picture of a man who was knowledgeable on many subjects, and who would talk to anyone about anything, but no one ever called him a know-it-all.

Look at the picture of a man who’s Celebration of His Life was held in a room with a capacity of 120, but approximate 150 people show up, stood around the walls and in the hallway to tell wonderful stories about George Phillips the man.

Thank you again, George Phillips

Errol Kerr Goes to the 2010 Winter Olympics!

Jamaican skier Errol Kerr, (yes, he's Jamaican), has his eyes set on the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Jamaica hopes to make an entry into the 2010 Winter Olympics after a gap of almost 18 years; their last appearance being in the Calgary games, where they sent a bobsleigh team. The team was actually the basis of the film ‘Cool Runnings’, which was filmed in 1993.

Kerr is just 22 years of age and was raised near Lake Tahoe . Jamaica ’s hopes rest on the shoulders of this one young man, who is also a part of the US Ski Cross Team; the team which has earned him his world ranking of 24. Despite being a part of this team, Kerr wishes to represent his father’s country during the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Kerr has recently made a trip to Jamaica in hopes of raising $200,000 USD in sponsorship. This is his first trip to Jamaica and he’s hoping to get enough sponsorship to pay for a coach, cover traveling costs and compete as a Jamaican.

The Jamaican Minister for Sport and the head of the Jamaican Ski association have been supporting Kerr towards his dream of taking part in the Vancouver games in 2010. However Kerr has also been told that by June 1st, he must state his allegiance to Jamaica to the International Ski federation. Unless he does this, he will not be able to ski for Jamaica in the future.

So, all of us can look out for this star cross skier in the Vancouver Winter Olympics of 2010.

It's Official:

The FIS has approved Errol's change of national team status. It is official that Errol will ski for Jamaica , beginning with this summer.

Thank you for all your support and understanding,
Catherine Kerr

I know many times you all are wondering what exactly I do to make money.  It is real not about the money, the things I do in life are about the impacts I can have to improve society and the betterment of those most often under served.  The link below is an article about the building I am currently designing, specifically the last image is the building I am leading, which is the Central Utility Plant or as the UK people call an "Energy Center" and it sounds much cooler; which provides all the power, water, and gases and critical systems for the entire campus as well as it will serve an interactive component for the importants teaching of energy minimization.

I hope you enjoy it,

News that ski clubs can use.....

Be Cautious if You Are Considering Changing to One Large Bag Due to Airlines $25 Second-Bag Rule.

OK, ski clubs fought the airlines’ second bag surcharge, we lost, and it’s now gotten tougher. Today, nine out of the ten airlines we checked with are charging the $25 second bag fee and American Airlines now charges $15 for your first bag.  But the per bag surcharge is no longer our main concern about luggage on airlines. There can be costlier luggage issues about which you should be aware.

In late May, The NSCN surveyed 10 North American airlines about surcharges for multiple bags, as well for oversized and overweight bag charges on domestic coach-class flights.  The good news was that, of the airlines surveyed, only Air Canada counts a ski bag and a boot bag as two bags. The other nine airlines count a ski bag and boot bag as one bag (with some restrictions).  But, with the exception of your ski bag’s length, the airlines are enforcing weight and size surcharges – and some of those charges can be substantial!  Traveling with just one bag that’s 63 inches in combined length, width, and height and which weighs over 50 pounds can cost you a $100 to $400 surcharge for a roundtrip flight!  (For example, United or Air Canada charge $100 for bags over 50 lbs plus $100 for being over 62" (not counting ski bag’s length) and each fee is charged for both inbound and outbound flights -- or a $400 total.) While it probably won’t apply to most skiers, for REALLY large or heavy bags, Delta charges $600 and American charges up to $530 per roundtrip flight for a bag that’s over 70 pounds and larger than 62" in total dimensions!

Basically, our luggage needs to be under 62" dimensions and under 50 pounds.  Check the airline’s website just prior to departure to see if the rules have changed recently – then make sure that trip leaders pass the information on to their participants.  Two small bags (or one bag plus a ski and boot bag) will usually be cheaper than one oversize and/or overweight bag. We also suggest that clubs equip trip leaders with a hand-held luggage scale to check participants’ bags for the return trip -- in case vacation purchases tip their bags to overweight.

Participants can check their own bags on the bathroom scale at home – but probably not at the resort – and the scales cost just $10-$30 each (or you can use the ones you received from Summit last year).

Note: Check with your airline as prices have changed since this article was written and will continue to change by the 2009 ski season.

June Recaps

 Rodney Strong

Rodney Strong Vineyards was the place to be Saturday, June 21st.  Even though the temperature soared close to , if not reaching, 100 degrees, All Seasons showed up and had a ball.  The venue was not too big, not too small…  every seat was a great seat, even for those of us who just chilled on the grass.  Jonathan Butler did his thing as usual.  He was so cool and mellow, that at one point I thought he was singing lullabies especially to me; so I fell asleep…  but just for a brief moment.

Brian Culbertson blasted onto the stage bringing with him a Funk Experience that had everyone on their feet for the remainder of the show.  By the time Brian arrived, the temperature had begun to cool down, so it was ON and crackin’…

We all had a great time helping DeWayne celebrate his B-Day!  Every time I checked, it looked as if Mr. McDaniels was having the time of his life movin’, groovin’ and partyin’ with a bevy of beauties.

A great time was had by all.  All Seasons was in the house!  Definitely worth the long drive out to Healdsburg….

 Fathers Day at the Races

With valet parking and reserve seating, some eighty plus members, friends and family gather at Golden Gate Fields to honor and celebrate Father’s Day! Many in gala hats and outfitters that would make the ladies at Church Hill Downs sipping mint juleps proud. There were fits in all colors and descriptions with everyone in a festive mood.

All the Fathers, Stepfathers, Grandfathers, Mothers who are also Fathers, Grandmothers who are Fathers, Uncles, Aunts, Great Uncles, Great Aunts and Cousins who are Fathers enjoyed a great day to celebrate, honor and be with Fathers!

There was a buffet breakfast, followed by the Golden Gate Fields Turf Club Buffet of hand craved Prime Rib, Seafood, Market Street Salad Bar, Side Dishes and accompaniments, Sweets, and Desserts. Coffee and tea were complimentary all other beverages were additional charges.

Some members made money on the ponies. Everyone enjoyed cheering for his or her horse to come in first, second or third.

The seventh race was named after All Seasons Ski Club; #2 Cross Fire was the winner. Some members of our group went to the Winners Circle to take a picture with the winning jockey.

This event was a great success because it was something the entire family could participate in and honor a member of the family that has risen to the duties of being a responsible parent.

Don't miss out next year on this wonderful event!

The Stone Soul Concert on Memorial Day was all that...

The weather was cool but just right for the lawn people like myself & crew.

The performers tore up the floor. The Whispers came on stage doing their bumpin and grindin with the utmost of class to their tunes. Chaka Khan had us on our feet, especially when she brought out Ledisi.

Then the headliner Frankie Beverly and Maze came on and blew up the stage with a routine that kept the audience up dancing the whole time.

Although myself, Bridgette Cook, Dawn Hills, Verna Brooks & Bev Collins were working the Black Expo booth we intermittently caught the performers, watched 75,000 (Sold out crowd) of yo’ cousins which was a talent show within itself and danced in our seats.

Don’t miss this event next year! It was the biggest ever.
