President's Message
Happy Summertime All Seasons:

Because the 4th of July fell on the first Wednesday of the month and our renewed commitment to get more involved in community service fell on the 2nd Wednesday we moved our general Meeting to July 18th. This of course was our Annual “BBQ Meeting in the Park” The meeting was very well attended and the grill team duo of Stan and Jerode handled the cooking duties once again, thanks fellas.

The Margaritas and Stanley Steamers were poured and consumed with delight. The grill team prepared hamburgers, links, chicken and grilled oysters on the half shell, oh yeah; we got a little bourgeois in the park. I want to thank Clare Oden for providing the oysters.
If you came expecting some type on business to be conducted, I hope you weren’t disappointed. This is more of a social gathering than a meeting, although we will still take your money for any event with a smile on our face and a drink in our hand.

Summit ’08 Breckinridge, Colorado
I know its only August but it’s time to get you mind right and your payment schedule in your budget. That’s right its Summit time! We will grace the slopes of Breckinridge for the first time as a group. The trip is in January and will conclude on the MLK weekend. I plan on hanging around for another day or two and take advantage of the holiday. Angie Ross is the tripleader, and she has lodging options in place, give her a call.

Winter Carnival ’08 Heavenly Ski Resort, So. Lake Tahoe
We are back on the block for this great family ski event hosted by your own Western Region. The dates are February 6-10. It will officially end on Saturday night with Sunday being your back to reality travel day. Remember, this is not a holiday weekend. Even though it is not over the MLK or another holiday weekend and the dates are in February, I need you to support this event. It is once again local and is a major fundraiser for your region and our youth. Plan it, Register and Enjoy.

ALL SEASONS 35TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER/DANCE
On October 13th, in the great city of Oakland we will celebrate our 35th year as one of the 12 founding clubs of the NBS. Join us as we celebrate another milestone for All Seasons Ski Club. Tip a glass to yourself as well as to past and present members. Contact Angie Ross for special table prices and sponsorships. ****Come in a day early and join us for a pre-festivities Golf Tourney on Friday October 12th with Happy Hour and appetizers to follow play. Contact former All Seasons President Thomas Shipp for details and tee times.
I want to say “WELCOME BACK” to former All Seasons Treasurer Chuck Bryant as he has renewed his membership with All Seasons, I was told the check has cleared, good to have ya’ back.

FIRE SAFETY MESSAGES OF THE MONTH:
Matches and lighters are for adults only // Security bars can block your escape.

Gary D. Garrett,
President, All Seasons Ski Club

Next General Meeting Theme: Summer Carnival Kick-off

Members Corner
Congratulations goes out toKeith and Cynthia Comier, on the birth of their daughter Kylah Noelle Cormier. Born Wednesday June 13th at 3:08pm - 6 lbs, 4 oz and 21 inches long.
Thank you for volunteering to host the ASSC Table at Black Expo 2007. We had a very successful turnout of interested people, both youth and adults. It is always good to know that folks are (still) interested and excited to hear what we are doing and how we impact the black community and that they want to be part of a fun group. Your volunteer efforts are very much appreciated. We captured over 300 people on the mailing list & seven (7) joined on the spot. Special thanks goes Phyllis Lohar-Singh, Membership Recruiter coordinating this effort.

    From Here to Timbuktu

Timbuktu, Mali: Intellectual and Spiritual Capital
    By Patsy Cunningham

From Here to Timbuktu, was an awesome trip - one I will never forget! Yes, there is a city in Mali named Timbuktu.
Few places in the world have an air of mystery as alluring as Timbuktu. The name of this city in the West African country of Mali is so wrapped in legend that many people think of Timbuktu as a mythical, timeless land rather than a city with a real history.

In many cultures, Timbuktu is used in phrases to express great distance and to suggest something beyond a person's experience. Popular sayings such as "I'll knock you clear to Timbuktu" suggest that, for many people, Timbuktu has existed more as an idea of the remote and mysterious than as an actual place.

For West Africans, however, Timbuktu was an economic and cultural capital equal in historical importance to acclaimed cities like Rome, Athens, Jerusalem, and Mecca. Beginning in the thirteenth century, Timbuktu became the center of a thriving trade in Africa. Prosperity made by the trans-Saharan trade routes brought great wealth to the city. This wealth attracted not only merchants and traders but also men of academic and religious learning.

Around 1100 C.E., a African woman called Buktu the settled Timbuktu as a seasonal camp. Grazing her herds and flocks during the dry season not far from the Niger River, she discovered an oasis and decided to set up a tented camp and dig a well there. Very soon, the little seasonal camp, called Timbuktu (literally Buktu's well) became an important stop for other nomads as well as the caravans travelling along the trans-Saharan route

Recently, Timbuktu was nominated and included on the list of the New7Wonders Finalists. I've learned a lot of history, including the great architecture, about Mali. Other cities visited in Mali were Mopti, Djenne, Bamako and Seguo. I also, took a short side trip to Darkar, Senegel. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed the trip.
