November 2009 Newsletter
NBS Mission: " To identify, develop and support athletes of color, who will win international and Olympic winter sports competitions, representing the United States, and increase participation in winter sports"
Assoc. President's Message....
Winter Carnival / Summit 2010
Deadlines have come and gone for Early Registration for Winter Carnival and Summit. But you can still get Regular Registration for both. Check with the Trip Leader for respective trips.
Rio de Janeiro
Plans change and people change. You can still put up a deposit for Rio. Our club alone has four people who have made it onto this trip from the wait list. Don't miss out, get your forms and $250 deposit in and get on the wait list.
Jamaica Funk
Jamaican ski gear funk that is. Yep, that's right. There is a Jamaican Ski Team (JST) Line available from Spyder. There is a limited supply, so if you're interested, buy it immediately. I say we at least get an order in for some hats or hoodie in support of Errol. We may not make it to the Winter Olympics, but we can fake the funk.
In addition to the turning our clocks back this past weekend, look at this safety message.
STAT - Safety Team Action Tools
5-Minute Messages Take just five minutes a week to raise the level of emergency preparedness and safety awareness in your organization.
For many, Daylight Savings Time (DST) came to an end this past weekend, at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 1st. This is an excellent time to update your preparedness in several simple ways:
- Check that your key phone and email contacts are updated and backed up - Check the charge in your fire extinguisher - Check the batteries in your smoke detectors and flashlights - Check the expiration dates on your food and water. If needed, use or donate them and replenish your supplies. When you set your clocks BACKWARDS, think to check on those items that are BACK UP resources: what you use when your own resources or first choices aren't available.
Thanks Karen Ambeau!
Fire Safety Message of the month:
When you set your clocks back, did you also change the batteries in your smoke detectors? You should.
Smooches,
AngieB

IN THE NEWS....
Lt. Col. James C. Warren:
Tuskegee Airman, American Hero
In the summer of 1942, James C. Warren, a 19-year-old underprivileged young black man from Gurly, Ala., read the August issue of American Magazine. An article titled "I Got Wings," written by Second Lieutenant Charles H. Debow, touched him deeply. Debow was one of the first five black cadets to graduate at Tuskegee Army Air Field and earn his silver wings.
"I was so proud; it brought tears to my eyes," Warren recalled. "The thought of ever being a part of that program never even touched my mind."

![]() Jamaican Ski Team Line
The Jamaican Ski Team (JST) line, from Spyder, has a very limited supply. It's suggested that if you’re interested, buy it immediately, since the majority of shops only bought 1 in each size. According to several owners, the industry was not too hip on the introduction of the line, so the sales were very conservative.
***Suggestion, anytime you see a Spyder Dealer, go in and ask for the Jamaican Ski Team Collection!!! We need them to understand that it's the HOT ITEM***
If you go to the spyder.com site, you'll notice that clicking on the JST collection brings only 4 items up, however, there are 20 products in the line. You'll need to search each line to find the item. They are working with Spyder to change this, since half the line will be in a fashion show on Nov 6th at the City Hall called where "Hip Hop meets Couture".
Attached is a link that has the line, however, some items were not made and other new items made so you'll need to review the site for a full view of the line, which is of the highest quality.
From Errol's site: Race Place has a good selection, however, only 1 of each size in the line. www.errolkerr.com (note: their goal is to add as many shops as possible once they have a feed from Spyder)
Errol will be here in San Francisco for the release of Warren Miller's "Dynasty" showing at Palace of Fine Arts Theatre on Nov 10 or 11th- Since he has a nice role in the Tahoe section.
They would love seeing NBS folks at the show. Perhaps we can meet before or after to hang out with Errol.
Errol will be skiing in the Winter Olympics in the X-Cross, which starts on Feb 21. In addition, here are some key dates for Errol in action:
Jan 20-- Blue Mtn--- Ontario, CN
Jan 24-- Lake Placid, NYJan 28-31--Aspen,CO Thanks again for your support... |

Meet and Greet Recaps
Bocanova
Bocanova is a nice restaurant for a Meet & Greet. It's located where the old Spaghetti Factory was in the heart of Jack London Square; the atmosphere/ambiance is wonderful... Roomy, including a spacious outdoor patio...most restaurant patios are small... Bocanova is a busy place, but quiet enough to hear your group talk... There were group tables for parties of 2, 4, 6; high tables and chairs, which are always fun to sit at; and a counter-type sitting space so that you can watch the cooks prepare your food; the wait staff is nice and friendly; several of them actually came over to where we were sitting and chatted with us for a while! Very diverse crowd of folk were there for Happy Hour and Dinner as well... Attendance was about 10 people; the food was "different", but fun... there is something for everyone and it won't hurt your wallet either... I'd say we go back there again! DC

Lend a Hand
Lend A Hand Foundation thanks those ASSC members & friends who attended their Seafood Fest on Oct. 9th.
The California Ballroom was transformed into a cabaret like hall where participants ate their fill of crab, catfish, crayfish, pasta and desserts catered by 3 Ladies Catering. Kim Pearson jumped in as a guest dealer at one of the gaming tables brought in by Ace Casino. Cynthia Cooper displayed her gaming skills and won a Raider gift basket that include 2 tickets to the game of her choice. Marc Gage didn’t do so bad himself. He won a gift basket from Scott’s Seafood Restaurant. Dawn Hills was the prize organizer and distributor. James McGee , Carolyn & Dennis Hurdle just looked in awe at the festivities. Andree Driskell came through also. Jenny West and myself are board members so we worked all night. After eating and gaming we danced to The Reed Fromer Trio who was off the hook. Thanks Again and hope to see you next year! BusyK ******
Cool Black Ball
