Presidents Message....

Hello All Seasons,
WINTER CARNIVAL 2010 SQUAW VALLEY USA
After a very easy 2 hour drive I arrived at Squaw Valley, this was only the second time I have been to this resort and I must say I was impressed. Ski resorts in the Tahoe area are not known for on mountain lodging so it was very nice to be able to play and stay without the hassle of driving.
The skiing was actually pretty good being that it hadn’t snowed for a few weeks. The Memorial for Spydrr and Jim Huff was very well attended and great stories were told. After the memorial those that could or thought they could took the run called Granite Chief. This was not a run a person (namely me) should take on his first ski day of the season. I made it down but it wasn’t pretty.
The happy hours and night parties were fun and it seemed that everyone had a great time. I want to thank the Winter Carnival staff which includes our own Debi Dohm for putting on another great event.

ALL SEASONS' MALLORY DUNCAN / NBS SKI TEAM
I appreciated Vincent Duncan coming to last months meeting and giving us an update on Mallory. They also came to Winter Carnival where Mallory foreran the race course. Please read the article and check out the pictures of Mallory.

ERROL KERR / WINTER X GAMES
Did you watch the games on Sunday? Errol took first in his quarterfinal race but came up short in the semi-final. After watching U.S. Skier Daron Rhalves go down in his quarterfinal race I was just hoping Errol made it through unscathed? As you know this race is an all out blitz from the start and these skiers hit speeds between 45-60 miles an hour so when a skier goes down, it is violent. Rhalves laid there with medical help for 20+ minutes and was brought down in a stretcher; he suffered a dislocated hip and is questionable for the Olympics.

OK, this Sista couldn't figure out how to set the fame size, so it will open in full screen. The video will be clearer if you make the screen smaller.

ALL SEASONS' OWN ERROL KERR // OLYMPIAN 2010 VANCOUVER
Errol made it through without a scratch and will be at the Olympics in Vancouver. He will represent Jamaica, his father’s country. Although he is not skiing for the U.S he is still a member of All Seasons Ski Club, so take extreme pride that you helped shape his future and that your club, All Seasons, will be the first club in the NBS to have a member skiing in the Olympic Games.

ALPINE MEADOWS
Alpine Meadows is hosting a sendoff party for Errol on Saturday, February 6, 2010. The skiing will be great and there will be Jamaican drink specials, jerk chicken and prizes including a trip to Jamaica. Let’s get some caravans together and get up to Alpine, see you at the top.

Mallory Duncan / ASSC Youth Ski Racer

Mallory Duncan is one of the All Seasons Ski Club Youth ski racers.  He is also a member of Team NBS, the national youth ski team.  He attends Sugar Bowl Academy in Soda Springs, California, where he is a high school senior.  In addition to his demanding classroom schedule, Mallory trains six to seven days a week.  His favorite event is Slalom, but he is also an accomplished Giant Slalom racer.

In the summer after the snow melts, Mallory follows the winter season to the southern hemisphere to train in places like Chile and New Zealand.  Mallory hopes to eventually join the US Olympic Ski Team and compete for Olympic gold in alpine skiing at a future Winter Olympics Games.  For the time being, Mallory plans to continue his education and his ski race training at the college level.  Mallory plans to study Language Arts where he will specialize in creative writing.  He has already been offered a scholarship and an invitation to attend Montana State University, which features a NCAA division one Ski Team.   He is waiting to hear from the other colleges that he has applied to before he makes his decision regarding a college choice.

Mallory and the Duncan family wish to thank the Gary Garrett, the ASSC membership and the NBS for their generous assistance in financial aid, equipment, training, encouragement and other support that has been provided over the years.

Big Powder Means Big Fun, But Don't Let It Be Your Last

My dad, the consummate, salmon fisherman, (and California ski pioneer) has a saying that has (likely) saved my life several times while abalone diving off the Sonoma coast: "Never turn your back on the ocean. If you do, it might be the last time."

Because no matter how smooth, or predictable the sea might look, it can always have a surprise in the form of a huge wave, or set of waves that can easily tumble you into the rocks and end your day and possibly your life.

The same danger exists when we have a series of monster storms that drops three, four, five or six feet of snow, all in rapid succession. Just because you have a skilled mountain crew, blasting away at those avalanches, does not mean you're free from exercising common sense and self responsibility. Here are a few tips that has kept the SOTC crew safe, even during the most epic, of deep powder days.

(1.) Do not ski alone. Even on slopes that you might consider safe, there is always the chance of taking a freak header into deep snow.

(2.) Take caution in the back country. Do not ski the back country alone, under any circumstances. Always have a mobile phone, or some kind of communication tool. Snowboarders are especially vulnerable to tree wells.

(3) Tell SOMEONE where you're planning to ski or ride.

(4.) Forget the trendy sunglasses. You'll lose them first time you fall, and the more expensive they are, the sooner you'll fall. It's a universal truth. Goggles are your friend in deep snow and nearly impossible to lose.

(5.) Take a lesson! Now is your chance to work with a professional ski instructor to get the basics of powder, or deep snow skiing or riding down.

It will be an awesome powder weekend. What will your (local) SOTC crew be doing? Cutting fresh tracks all across Lake Tahoe, and the steeper and deeper, the better. But we won't be doing it alone! Make it a great weekend!
